Review: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I came across this book when Prof Barbara Oakley mentioned about this book in her book “ A MIND FOR NUMBERS”. This is one kind of self-help book that never gets boring. Its completely filled with examples like how an alcoholic went sober, how Starbucks turned around their misfortunes, how gambling becomes an addiction, how Michael Phelps won a lot of gold medals in Olympics, how pepsodent was introduced first time among the masses etc.
Habits consist of three parts - cues, routines, and rewards. Often the cues and rewards are interlinked such that routinely occurs automatically. The cue can be watching an ad of pizza and the reward is that your food craving will get satisfied. And the routine here is opening the app and ordering it which is automatic.
Another important thing that I got to learn was about keystone habits. Keystone habits are generally small habits in our lives which trigger us to adopt other good habits easily. Exercise is one such example. When you start to exercise, it becomes easier to counter your fast food habits. Making your bed in the morning is another example of Keystone habits.
I will advise reading this book slowly since it requires a lot of analysis of our daily habits.
